SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) is one of a key part of Inbound Marketing. Because more and more people are opting for Digital Marketing as a career, we thought we’d create a set of 40 SEO Interview Questions that are frequently asked at Digital Marketing Interviews.
So, let’s dive deep into the questions –
1. What is SEO?
SEO stands for Search Engine Optimisation. It is the art of ranking websites on search engines naturally or without paid to the search engine.
2. What’s the importance of SEO?
SEO is very important when it comes to inbound lead generation. It’s one of the most cost-effective ways of getting quality leads. As most web searches start on Google, it’s very important to rank higher in the SERPs on Google (World’s biggest search Engine). This can only be done through a proper SEO plan.
3. Define the two types of SEO?
Two types of SEO is –
1. On Page SEO –
On Page SEO is the work done on the site to improve the search rankings. Few examples would be –
i) Writing a proper headline
ii) Including the keyword in the meta description

2. Off Page SEO
Off-Page SEO relates to any work done, off-site to improve the rankings. This mostly includes the creation of backlinks, social media signals etc.
Backlinks are incoming links coming from a web page. In other words, when a website links to another webpage it’s called a backlink.
Backlinks are very crucial in ranking websites higher on Google.

5. Mention the two types of backlink?
Backlinks are mainly of two types –
1. Do-Follow Backlinks
2. No-Follow Backlinks
6. What are do-follow backlinks?
DoFollow links pass link juice which has an impact on Google Ranking Algorithm.
7. How is a do-follow link different from a no-follow link?
Do-follow links pass link juice which nofollow links doesn’t pass any link juice. Hence, no-follow links have little to no impact on Google Ranking Algorithm. This is true for all search engines.
8. What is a keyword?
Keyword in SEO is key phrases or words that are included in web content to help users find the specific website by entering relevant search queries on Google and other search engines.
Keywords can be of different types –
1. Short tail keyword
2. Long tail keyword
9. What is an anchor text?
Anchor Text is the visible, clickable text which you see on a hyperlink. In modern browsers, it is often blue and underlined.

11. What is the Meta Description length?
We can include up to 158 characters in Meta description.
12. What is the Title tag length?
We can include up to 60 characters in the Headline. Google (search engine) typically displays the first 50–60 characters of a title tag.
13. What is Google Sandbox?
Google Sandbox is a filter that prevents new websites from ranking in the top results of Google.
14. What is a long tail keyword?
Long tail keywords are those keywords which are more than 4+ words. These are used to drive targeted traffic to web pages. Most of the times these are very easy to rank for on Google.

15. What are LSI Keywords?
Latent semantic indexing (LSI) is a system search engines use to analyze the other words people use surrounding a given topic. It’s mostly the keywords, Google suggests at the bottom of the page.

Competitive Analysis in SEO is the comparison between the webpage people are working on & the webpage that has been already ranked on Google.
18. What is 301 redirect?
A 301 redirect is a permanent redirect which passes between 92-99% of link equity (ranking power) to the redirected page. 301 is the HTTP status code for such types of redirect.
19. What are the most important places the main keyword should be included?
The keyword should be included in –
- Title of the Page
- Meta Description
- The body of the post
- The headline of the page
20. What was Google’s recent Algorithm update?

21. What is robots.txt?
Robots.txt is a text file which gives instruction to search engine crawlers about indexing and caching of a webpage, file of a website or directory, domain. It’s very crucial when it comes to On-Page SEO.
22. What is keyword density?
Keyword Density is the percentage of the keyword mentioned in the content when compared to a total number of words. So if my keyword is mentioned 5 times in 1000 words content the keyword density would amount to 0.5 %.
23. What is the use of Google Search Console?
Search Console is the suite of tools and reports offered by Google to help one measure their site’s Search traffic and performance, fix issues etc.
24. Name the different types of heading tags?
There are six types of HTML headings – H1 to H6.

36. What is Canonical URL?
Canonical URLs relate to the concept of selecting the best URL for the web pages that the potential visitors want to see.

38. What is XML Sitemap?
XML or Extensible Markup Language is primarily created to facilitate the functionality of the search engines.

40. What is Guest posting?
Guest Posting is the act of creating articles & publishing on someone else’s website.
